Harry's OLD-ENGINERailroad Book Store and Collectibles

![]() Welcome to Harry's OLD ENGINE Railroad Book Store. I have selected books and magazines on locomotives, steam and Diesel railroads, model railroading and old toy trains from American Flyer and Lionel. Why am I interested in railroads? In my pre-teen years, the Lehigh Valley Railroad ran near NYS Route 414 on the hill behind my parents' grape vineyard. While we worked the various seasonal tasks of maintaining the vineyard, passing steam engines blew the whistle for the nearby grade crossing. |

America's Rail Pictorial by Russ Porter From the 1950s through the 1970s, a dramatic move to upgrade railroad property and equipment led to sweeping changes in the industry. Those changes are reflected in this colorful tribute to American rails and the streamlining that occurred during this period. Author Russ Porter, who has photographed American railways for more than 50 years, takes his readers on a trek that captures all the romance of steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and gas-electrics. From the small Chicago & Western Indiana to main lines like the Northern Pacific, this sampling of Porters work preserves the essence of each line throughout the decades photographed.

Trains of America All-Color Railroad Photography Featuring the Late Steam and Early Diesel Era - Published by Heimburger House, 7236 W. Madison Street, Forest Park, IL 60130. A large format (101/2x11") celebration of steam, diesel, and turbine powered locomotives of some 90 railroads, their track, and trains. The diversity of scenes, generally good to fine color, and the large number of lines raises this from the run-of-the-mill fan books. It shares with those the neglect of interiors--of passenger cars and of locomotives. Some 400 photos--all in color.
"Vintage Diesel Locomotives" covers the history of diesels in North America from beginnings in the 1930s through 1969. There are many nice color photos and a few black-and-whites. The text is highly readable and not overly ponderous or technical. All major diesel builders are covered: General Motors/EMD, General Electric, American Locomotive (Alco), Baldwin/Lima-Hamilton, and Fairbanks-Morse (F-M).
The Engine Driver's Manual : How to Prepare, Fire and Drive a Steam Locomotive by Brian Topping : Obviously, in the states, it is hard to find a book on how to prepare, fire, and drive a British steam locomotive. This book provides plenty of illustrations, photos, text and history that deals with the many aspects of this subject.
Classic American StreamlinersThe streamlined style of the trains of yesteryear reassured passengers that they were the fastest, most-efficient vehicles ever to cheat the wind. Wonderful examples of Classic American Streamliners and the aura of high-speed, high-efficiency travel they created, are included in this book of the same name. These pages include all the great trains from 1933 through the 1960s, a time when people knew these streamliners by name. 150 color illustrations, 50 b&w. The Last Steam Railroad in America:From Tidewater to Whitetop - Between 1955 and 1959, Link traveled up and down the Norfolk & Western's divisions, taking pictures of the trains, towns, and people who worked on the railroad and lived beside it. Published here for the first time are photographs he made in daylight, as well as at night and on the branches of the railroad not covered in his first book, Steam, Steel & Stars. 124 photos, 100 in duotone, 24 in full color. Superpower : The Making of a Steam Locomotive The ultimate boy's book! The story of the building of the "Berkshire," the greatest steam locomotive to ride the "high iron." This book is brilliant in scope, content, and presentation. The horizontal layout and binding are magnificent. The line drawings are, in a word, exquisite. They serve not only to illustrate the arcane processes involved in creating a steam locomotive, but the personalities of the Creators themselves. The text and drawings tie in closely, and paint a picture from a boy's viewpoint of history in the making. It would be difficult to overstate the impact of this book. It redefines the concept of classic. Pennsylvania Railroad (Railroad Color History)by Mike Schafer, Brian Solomon, Michael Blaszak : The history fo the PRR from start to finish. Scan The Book Aisles
